I have listed vocabulary words and their definitions that corresponds with our place value unit. I have also provided some online and paper-and-pencil activities (linked in the vocabulary page under vocabulary activities and games) so that your child can practice our new vocabulary we will cover in this unit.
Place Value Vocabulary Words
Ascending order: Arranged from smallest to largest
Base ten blocks: blocks that represents base ten number values
Base ten system: a number system based on ten (position of the number)
Digit: symbol used to show a number
Equal: having the same amount or value
Estimate: an approximate or rough calculation (rounding)
Greater than: more than, shows relationship between numbers
Grouping: dividing things into equal groups
Hundred: whole number equal to 10 X 10 (hundreds place is the third place value)
Less than: not as many as, shows relationship between numbers
Numbers: numbers describe quantities or values
Number sense: understanding a lot about numbers and how they work
One: the number after zero, a cardinal number (ones place is the first place value)
Place value: the value of a digit depending on its place in a number
Rounding: change a number to a more convenient number
Ten: the number after nine, a cardinal number (tens place is the second place value)
Thousand: ten hundreds (thousands place is the forth place value)
Value: numerical worth or amount
Zero: the numeral 0, used as a place value
