Memory (also known as concentration) is a matching card game. This is an easy and fun way to practice vocabulary words with your child. You will need thirty-eight index cards (3 x5). On nineteen of the cards, write our nineteen place value vocabulary words on each card. On the remaining nineteen cards, write the definitions. After shuffling the cards, place the cards face down on a surface. The object of memory is to turn over pairs of a word with the definition. If the match is correct, you get to keep the cards. If the match is incorrect, flip the card back over and the other person takes a turn. Take turns with your child turning over cards and trying to make a match!
Word mapping is making a graphic organizer that can help your child think about vocabulary words in several ways. For each vocabulary word, the child will create a word map. The child will first write the vocabulary word in the middle of the map. Then, the child will fill in the definition, synonym, antonym, and a picture to illustrate the word or the word used in a sentence. Completing the word map can help the child make connections to the vocabulary word.
